Conventions of a Music Video

Music video's are all different but usually have features that make them conventional to a genre. These tend to be:
  • Marketing device for the artist
  • Usually has close up shots to sell the artist
  • Can promote a message or product
  • The artist is shown performing
  • The lyrics of the song influence what is shown in the video (mise en scene)
  • The pace of the editing fits the piece of the music
  • Codes of dress reflect the mood of the song
  • The use of lip syncing tends to always be used.

Problems in the Music Industry

Record labels made most of their money through the selling on CDs and Vinyls in the 20th century. However, as technology developed throughout the years, this became a problem for the income of record labels due to the fact that the internet is available for anyone to download music through websites such as iTunes or Spotify, and illegal downloads are also increasing. This means that CDs and Vinyls are no longer the main income from record labels and online companies are taking over.

Genre Research (BROODS)

I have done some research into the genre of Indie Pop, I studied the codes and conventions, and the general theme and feel of the genre through the artists, songs and music videos.

I will now be showing you 3 artists that that I feel show a clear representation of this genre.

BROODS:

Broods are a brother and sister duo from New Zealand. Georgia Nott had the lead vocals, whilst her brother and band mate, Caleb Nott works on the production and backing vocals. They are signed with Capitol and Polydor Records and there first single 'Bridges' went to No.8 on the New Zealand single chart. They released there first EP 'Broods' on 30th January 2014, which was followed by an album called 'Evergreen' on the 22nd August 2014.
They have been the opening act for Ellie Goulding, Haim and Sam Smith and in 2015 they had their own headlining tour in North America.
They released there second album 'Conscious' on the 24th June 2016.

Music Videos:

These videos by broods represent what a typical video in the Indie Pop genre looks like.  This is due to the fact that the first one is very minimalistic, and heavily based on a narrative, however the video appears quite natural, doesn't have a lot of artificial things in it, therefore creating a very rustic and natural feel to it.
The second video displays a large amount of neon lights and bright colours, it does not follow a narrative but focuses mainly on the art created in the video.
Both of these videos are very different in appearance but are still typically Indie Pop videos as they don't follow a typical storyline, and match the theme of the song.

Genre Codes and Conventions

After researching genre's and the different codes and conventions associated to them, we have decided to choose Indie Pop.

Indie Pop is a genre of Alternative Rock that begun in the UK in the 1970's with roots from the Scottish post-punk bands.
Indie pop is different to 'indie rock' as it is less aggressive and loud, and is more melodic.
Indie pop music began to become popular through independent record labels and shop and built a small fan base which grew.
A band who is seen to be one of the first, popular indie pop bands is 'The Smiths'.

Indie Pop Music Videos
The videos in this genre of music tend to have a lower budget. The main settings used are studios, cities, parks and woods. These locations create mystery which makes the audience more interested in the video and song and therefore, will give their full attention to it.

Most Indie Pop music videos have a live performance from the artist as it makes the audience see the talent that the artist has. They also promote the artist by allowing the audience see the atmosphere of their concerts, therefore encouraging the public to watch the artist live.
The live performances are put together with a narrative to break up the music video whilst also making a memorable video.

The narrative is a key feature in an Indie Pop music video. It helps tell a story with images and videos  which are usually linked to the lyrics of songs which is suggested by Goodwin's Theory.
The narrative videos also include varying special effects which keeps the audience engaged and make it more appealing to watch.

Mise en Scene is also used in Indie Pop videos. They tend to be generally simple and are linked to the scene. The props used in a music video can change the whole idea of a music video such as in Ed Sheeran's 'A Team', the prop of drugs changes the audiences whole opinion about the girl in the video.
Costume and makeup are also important, as they create the character. It shows their age, personality and even the era of the music video.

Music Video History

The invention of film and cinema brought about the possibility of combining music and moving images.
Through technology developing over time, the music video has come to where it is today.

The early years:

  • Surprisingly, music videos have been around since the 1920's.
  • Many Jazz musicians of the time, such as Bessie Smith, made short films to accompany her popular songs.
Bohemian Rhapsody

in 1975, Queen released a music video for their song 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and marked the beginning of the video era and set the language for modern music. This video is considered one of the first to use advanced visuals effects.
