Problems when filming

Through our filming process we came across a few problems. These were technical issues, production issues and team issues.

Technical Issues
During this project we had some problems with the technical aspects. For example the cameras were sometimes being used by other students, so when we wanted to fillm, we had to rearrange to when a camera and other equipment would be available. Also during the editing process, I had issues with final cut pro being slow, meaning I did not get what I wanted to complete on a certain day finished, leaving us behind in the process.

Production Issues
When we went to film at certain locations, like the pier, we found that it was not what we expected and the shots we filmed did not look good, therefore we wasted some days as we did not use the shots, and had to relocate. Another issue, is that we had to travel to Gods Own Junkyard for a long time with large equipement and a group member couldn't attend so it was hard to travel there.

Team Issues
In our group, we all had a different role to ensure the production was as quick a possible so when someone was absent or did not do a task then we were limited as we had to do their role aswell as our own.

Feedback from first draft

The feedback from our class and teachers was really helpful and my group and I will analyse and use it to improve out final music video.

Production Log 5

Today we refilmed the second chorus. We did this because we felt it needed to be darker to match the theme in the second half of the video. Therefore, we left out the light boxes and just used the disco lights. This also made the colours a lot bolder, matching the neon setting more. We used a range of different shots this time, mid shot, close up, etc. This will break up the video more, rather than using repetitive shots.

The Editing Process

I have begun to edit now, using the shots we have already filmed. I am using Final cut Pro. So far i have added the audio from the song, this shows me how long the video should be and also tells me where the song changes pace, beat or tempo. This means i know where i should cut scenes and also allows me to match up the lipsyncing to the song.
I have also used different transitions and effects to make the video flow better and be in time with the song.

Production Log 4

Today we began to film the second verse of our chorus. We went to London with our equipment, and went to the location 'Gods Own Junkyard'. This is a small showroom and cafe that is filled with handmade neon signs and lights. This gave off the effect that we wanted the video to look bright and energetic whilst also adding to the songs built up pace. These shots turned out very well and match what we wanted perfectly.
On the way home we also filmed some filler shots to put in areas where we might not have enough narrative.

Production Log 3

Today we went to film the first bit of the narrative. We wanted to film the pier scene, however we had some difficulty deciding on the perfect location. We were told about how the pier in Thamesmead would look good for our video so we went there to film but the shots did not look good. They were filmed on a sunny day, resulting in lens flare, and it did not fit the narrative that we were building around the weather.

We then went to Erith Pier. The weather was a lot more grey this time, which fitted perfectly with out idea. The Pier was a lot bigger and there was more visible sea, this led to good shots being produced.
We will use the shots from this shoot during the first verse in the song.

Location searching

Our music video will include several locations as we are wanting to build a narrative through the settings.
We want to begin in a calm location with a grey, sad appearance to it, and gradually make the video brighter through the use of lighting and location.

We want to use a pier for the first shot so it will be a natural setting with not many distractions from the artist. We want to film on a dark day, giving it a melancholy feel. This will begin to build the narrative of the video as it enhances how the artist is sad after a breakup.

We chose Erith Pier:

We then wanted a different location for the end of the video, when the artist has begun to get over the breakup and there is light in their life again. We wanted to represent through the use of lighting. Bright colours will be seen throughout the song in the choruses but this will conclude through a location filled with neon lights.

We decided on 'Gods own Junkyard' which a small place in london which is filled with handmade neon signs.

Editing Effects

In our music video, I decided to add effects in some of the scenes that were longer and not very exciting as they were. Adding effects makes the video more interesting and appealing to look at and breaks up longer scenes.
I added a kaleidoscope, tiles and blurrs into the video.

Our Establishing Shots

Like in the music videos I researched, I wanted to add some establishing shots with the artists name. This is similar to the one in the 'The 1975's-Somebody Else' video. I feel establishing shots are a good way to set a scene, tone and aesthetic of a video.

In our video we filmed the sea and left the shots to play for a while so it showed the audience that the video was slow and calm to match the song.
